Halloween Junk Food

1 Oct

Okay, so today was a good day. It rained and/or was dark & gloomy all day long, which is a great way to kick off October! It sets the proper mood for the fall, Halloween, and horror movie marathons, I think. Now we just need to kick these low-mid 70s temperatures. >=(

So anyway, yeah, this is “Halloween Scream 2007″. Every other pop culture site runs Halloween features this time of the year, so why can’t I? Afterall, it is the second best holiday EVER (the first being Christmas). I’m shooting for a Halloween-themed post every other day, but if you don’t get your hopes up, I won’t either. ;)

Now, let’s get on with the creepshow…

I was at the grocery store just two nights ago, looking for a sugar fix. I wanted cake. I wanted frosting. I wanted it NOW. Well, I put the cake on hold when I found these:

Mrs. Freshley’s Jack-O-Lanterns!

Wait a second… She works in the snack cake industry *AND* her last name is Freshley? Coincidence… or clever marketing? You decide! Once I saw these in the store, I just had to have’em. They were calling my name. And yes, I know these are nothing more than orange snowballs. But ORANGE SNOWBALLS RULE!!! Let us enjoy a picture of them undressed…

Mmm… orange breasts, I mean– Mmm… Jack-O-Lanterns.

I bet you’re wondering what’s inside these delicious Jack-O-Lanterns, huh? I was too. I imagined a flock of purple bats flying out the cream filling, or possibly green ogres would come bouncing forth with adorable little axes in hand. But I found neither, all I found was the usual snowball line up.

I might even say that they had an almost caramel taste to them. I’m sure it was just an chance amalgamation of the coconut and marshmallow, but the taste was there, man. I couldn’t further investigate because my other Jack-O-Lantern ended up getting nibbled on by a Pumpkin!

THIS Pumpkin!

The second treat I recently found is something I wish I would’ve discovered long ago: Brach’s Halloween Orange Creme Nougats. Of course I’ve been eating their Christmas peppermint nougats for years, but I never realized they’ve been hooking us up with Halloween nougies as well!

As you can tell by the half eaten bag, they’re really good stuff. But is it strange to anyone else that the flavor of orange is so closely associated with Halloween? There’s really no connection to be seen. Were the original jack o’lanterns carved out of oranges? Surely we’re not so uncreative that we decided to use orange flavoring to go along with the traditional Halloween color of orange? But then again, would Brach’s Halloween Pumpkin Creme Nougats sell that well?

Brach, the Frowning Orange Creme Nougat says no.

I know this was a pretty image intensive post, but hey, WWE Raw is about to come on, I had to start with something easy. Trust me, they won’t all be an imagefest.

As an added bonus to every Halloween post, being a horror movie buff, I’ll spotlight a horror movie that you oughta watch. And if you have watched it, watch it AGAIN this month.

Shaun of the Dead (2004)

Good question… I actually haven’t noticed any, but to be honest, due to me cleaning up my eating habits, I haven’t hardly looked at Halloween candy this year.
