Okay, so I’ve talked about cartoons I want on DVD (Part 1 and Part 2), now it’s time to get down to business with Christmas specials that still need a DVD release. It seems like every year this list keeps getting smaller, if only by one or two releases, but I’ll take what I can get when I can get it.
The 2008 holiday season gave us the long-waited Jim Henson’s The Christmas Toy and as for this year — Warner Bros. is finally giving us the not-so-famous 1985 Rankin-Bass special The Life and Adventures of Santa Claus which was based on the children’s book by L. Frank Baum. Granted, it is only available through their Warner Archive online store (as part of a 2-in-1 DVD along with Nestor, the Long-Eared Christmas Donkey) because the DVDs are made to order, but this is still progress so I can scratch that one off my list this year.
Now let’s take a look at what’s left before I can truly have a complete Christmas DVD collection…
A Very Brady Christmas (1988)
I never see this one getting much mention from nostalgic sites but I really loved this made-for-TV movie. That’s really strange coming from me because I hated The Brady Brunch. I guess the theme of Christmas is too good for even the Bradys to ruin it. My family used to have this recorded on VHS when I was a little and I would always watch it around Christmastime. ABC Family is airing it this year, it’s well worth seeking out if you like hokey made-for-TV Christmas movies.
Yogi Bear’s All-Star Comedy Christmas Caper (1982)
Hands down one of my favorite Christmas specials EVER. This was another special we had on tape and I played it and played it and played it forever, even when it wasn’t Christmas. I’m hopeful Warner will release this one next year because the first Yogi Christmas special (the approriately-titled) Yogi’s First Christmas just became available last month on DVD directly through Warner Archive. Surely they’re aiming for a complete Yogi Christmas experience!
The Cabbage Patch Kids’ First Christmas (1984)
So awesome. Even though there isn’t a DVD available, I’m lucky enough to still have the original VHS copy this was recorded on from the original airing on television, but still… I want it on DVD so I can move past VHS completely!
The Little Drummer Boy Book II (1976)
This is Rankin-Bass, so I gotta own it no matter what. This follow-up to the 1968 original was meant to be included on Warner’s Classic Christmas Favorites box set from 2007 (which featured Rankin-Bass specials plus the original Grinch) and was even mentioned in all promotions for the set… But was noticeably absent once it was released. What gives, WB? At least ABC Family is showing it this year…
The First Christmas (1975)
Another Rankin-Bass special and ABC Family is also showing it this month. GIVE ME MY DVD!!! Also known as The Story of the First Christmas Snow and The First Christmas: The Story of the First Christmas Snow.
A Flintstone Christmas (1977)
Huh. I was thinking this was an ’80s special. Oh well, it doesn’t deter from the quality one bit. Of course, I fully expect that classic Fruity Pebbles Christmas commercial to be included as a special feature.
Bug Bunny’s Looney Christmas Tales (1979)
For anyone who follows those ridiculously priced Looney Tunes DVD sets, you may already be aware that the three shorts which made up this special (Bugs Bunny’s Christmas Carol, Freeze Frame, The Fright Before Christmas)
are all on Volume 5 as special features. Well I say that’s not good enough! If Warner is putting out garbage like 2006’s Bah, Humduck! A Looney Tunes Christmas (which for a second had me excited because I thought it was going to feature these other Christmas shorts) then they can give us the original Looney Tunes Christmas shorts as well as a stand-alone release!
Christmas Comes to PacLand (1982)
I have never seen this special before, I have never heard of this special before but it’s Pac-Man and it’s Christmas. How could any child of the ’80s not want it??? I remember liking the Pac-Man cartoon show, so I’m sure this is just as good.
The Smurfs’ Christmas Special (1982)
Another classic that I’ve had to settle for for far too long on VHS. Would be nice if we got a 2-in-1 DVD release with…
‘Tis the Season to Be Smurfy (1987)
Ugh. This is the Baby Smurf era. I’ve never seen this or at least I don’t remember ever seeing it, but no matter, I’m sure it’s… okay.
A Muppet Family Christmas (1987)
I swear I do not remember this special but I had to have been all over it back in the day because it featured all kinds of characters from Sesame Street, The Muppet Show and Fraggle Rock mingling together. That’s a powerful line-up. I bet I’d get a real kick out of watching this today.
The Star Wars Holiday Special (1978)
How could I not put this on? I’ve only ever seen clips for it and humorous articles based on it. C’mon, George, you lost your integrity in the mid-90s so stop ignoring your past and give the world your goofy Christmas special. Would you be enticed if I told you you could make some money off of it..?
