Yogi Bear’s All Star Comedy Christmas Caper (2010, Warner Home Video)

Last year, I posted a list of Christmas specials that I wanted to see on DVD. Well, this year we can strike one of those shows off the list. Finally, Yogi Bear’s All Star Comedy Christmas Caper (not to be confused with 1980’s Yogi’s First Christmas) has arrived for generations old and new to enjoy again and again!
It’s still just as fun as I remembered it. While they’re supposed to be hibernating, Yogi and Boo Boo have snuck off to the “Big City” to spend Christmas with their friends. Who are the friends, you ask? Well that’s where the “all star” part comes in: Huckleberry Hound, Hokey Wolf, Snagglepuss, Quick Draw McGraw, Augie Doggie & Doggie Daddy and Super Snooper & Blabber Mouse. Apparently Yogi and his friends do not communicate well (or at all) because while Yogi and Boo Boo are off to the city, Huckleberry and the gang have come to Jellystone.
Yogi’s friends and an irate Ranger Smith set off on their on courses to find Yogi. With the bears on the run from some zoo keepers, Yogi and Boo end up dressed up as Santa Claus and an elf and run into a young girl, Julie Jones, who has all the money in the world but not the attention and affection of her dad. Quite easily, Yogi bumps into all of his friends while Ranger Smith still is in search to find them.
Anyway, Yogi wants to take Julie home but she refuses to tell them where she lives because she thinks her dad doesn’t care about her. Yogi and all his friends take pages from the phone book and start out hunting down all the Joneses. In the meantime, the police and Julie’s father think she’s been kidnapped by a couple of bears. Of course, the cops finally catch up to ol’ Yogi and are forced to put him down with a hail of gunfire. Just kidding! Everyone realizes it was all just a misunderstanding and the father ends up taking full blame for neglecting his daughter and her running away. The kid and dad make up, Ranger Smith forgives Yogi and the show ends with everyone singing “Jingle Bells”.
There’s a number of other fun cameos while the gang is out searching for Julie’s parents. Snagglepuss bumps into Fred Flintstone & Barney Rubble who are dressed up as bell-ringers. As a kid, I never even questioned it but watching this show just now, I wondered how Fred & Barney were in a modern day city. Just after I pondered that in bemusement, Snagglepuss says to them, “aren’t you chaps a little far from Bedrock, like, about three million years?” Slyly, they ignore the question and tell them they’re working for a charity. Also, Mr. Jinks and Pixie & Dixie have a moment as do Wally Gator, Magilla Gorilla and Yakky Doodle, who were aiding in the search.
This was one of my favorite Christmas specials when I was a kid. Right up there with The Christmas Toy, the Smurfs, Rudolph, Charlie Brown, Garfield, Cabbage Patch Kids and Very Brady Christmas. For my money (all $12 or so I paid for it on Amazon!), it still holds up. I’ve never been a big fan of Hanna-Barbera cartoons (growing up watching TNT and TBS in the ’80s, it was kind of hard to avoid them) but I really loved seeing all their characters together for this special.
If you remember seeing this back in the day, I recommend picking it up, it’s still a fun Christmas special. The special feature is an episode from The Yogi Bear Show called “Yogi’s Birthday Party”. I never really liked Yogi’s show, so I haven’t watched it yet but I’m sure I’ll get around to it. Kinda odd they couldn’t or wouldn’t just do a Yogi Christmas collection and have Yogi’s First Christmas on this disc instead but they made that special available as a DVD on demand from the Warner Archives just last year (yes, I have it and yes I plan on reviewing it before the month is up).
By the way, why is it every Hanna-Barbera character wears a silly hat and/or bowtie?
