Like many people at this time of the year, I’m nuts about pumpkin-flavored everything: coffee, muffins, bread, cupcakes, candy, ice cream, donuts, cookies, pumpkin pie, etc. That’s a lot of calories, but if it’s pumpkin-flavored, I have to try it at least once. It doesn’t hurt that orange is my favorite color, so you could basically color something orange and put a pumpkin on the cover of the package and I’d try that as well. Pumpkin spice-scented candles are also a must.
September 1st always kicks off the fall season for me. This is when I get into a more positive mindset as I begin to think about the seasonal changes that come with fall and, of course, Halloween. The calendar may say that fall (or Autumn, if you prefer) starts on September 22, but in my mind, the leaves are already falling, the air is crisp and I can smell smoke coming from chimneys in the evening.
I’ve already done a pretty good job of keeping up with the pumpkin spirit, I think. A stop at the local Dunkin Donuts produced pumpkin-flavored coffee along with a pumpkin donut and after a trip to Target, I ended up with Pillsbury’s “Perfect Pumpkin” cake mix (with cream cheese frosting, of course) and Pumpkin Spice M&M’s. I also bought Glade’s pumpkin spice candle, which is incredibly strong to the point where it’s sickly sweet and nauseating. Dial it back a bit next time, guys.
I’m not sure if the M&M’s are new to this year or not. I don’t recall seeing them in previous years and I certainly would’ve snatched up a bag if I had. The packaging is great. It’s got the perfect color scheme of tan, brown and orange. The colors of the M&M’s themselves are orange, brown and green. Oh, and if I could get a hi-res image of the M&M character from the bag as the background for my desktop, that’d be great, thanks.
I expected something a bit more different from these M&M’s. I expected a softer texture, something more along the lines of peanut butter M&M’s in terms of texture and color. What we have here is the typically somewhat bland & chalky chocolate M&M’s has always had but with pumpkin spice flavoring. I’d rather pumpkin spice took center stage instead of being used as an extra kick for the chocolate, but I’ll take what I can get. If you can imagine a pumpkin spice mocha or pumpkin spice hot cocoa, this is the candy form.
Ultimately, Pumpkin Spice M&M’s are not what I wanted or expected, but they are fine. I probably will not buy another bag (I’m not a big fan of M&M’s in general), but I’m glad I tried these.
As for the cake mix, I haven’t made it yet. It may be just a bit too soon for that. The timing isn’t right just yet. Pumpkin cupcakes are heavy artillery and I don’t want to fire one of my biggest guns so soon. Plus, I’m debating on whether I should try to find and buy some type of pumpkin-shaped baking pan for it!
