I don’t know if the release of these Hostess donuts is tied to the fall season but it wouldn’t be stretch to think so. Apple cinnamon is pretty standard during the autumn and holiday seasons and devil’s food? C’mon, man, that’s GOTTA be intentional for a release around Halloween time. I don’t ever recall seeing these donuts anywhere else before, so yeah, let’s say they’re seasonal.
I could understand not paying too much attention to these though if you briskly sashayed by them in the supermarket. They don’t look any different on the surface. There’s nothing on the packaging that tells you they are a limited edition or season; no fun fall colors or shapes to grab your attention. Giving everything a brief once over (without actually reading the packaging), you would think they were Hostess’ usual frosted chocolate & cinnamon donuts.
I was definitely most excited to try the apple cinnamon donuts and they are easily the better of the two. Even without opening the bag, that wonderful scent of apples & cinnamon was wafting in the air and that’s when I began to think of those old TMNT cookies. I must have gotten a super fresh batch because these donuts are incredibly soft and moist. I’m not sure if it would really feel right eating these in the middle of the summer but they really are perfect for snacking (and breakfast, too, I suppose) during the fall season.
As for the frosted devil’s food donuts… Eh. I don’t like frosted chocolate mini donuts (or “gems”, as other companies call them). The chocolate is always thick and waxy and the donut inside is always full of air bubbles and dry. These types of donuts are about the cheapest, lowest-quality donut you can find, no matter the brand. Hostess’ take on devil’s food doesn’t change that. I was hoping for something richer and more moist than the usual yellow cake donut used, but nope. I can barely even tell this is devil’s food and it’s just as dry and full of air bubbles as the usual frosted chocolate donuts.
If you’re a fan of frosted chocolate donuts, you will like frosted devil’s food donuts but they aren’t anything special. As for the apple cinnamon donuts, GET THEM. I know I’ll be buying another bag or two before the season is over.
