Ah, gummy (or gummi, if you prefer) candy. I’ve always had a soft and chewy spot for them in my heart. I would much rather have some type of gummy candy over chocolate or hard candy. I’ll talk about some of my favorites at a later date, but today it’s all about trying new things!
Some people may not have a preference when it comes to what company makes their gummy candy. Well, I do. It’s Haribo for me or it’s nothing. Brands like Trolli and Black Forest (both owned by the Ferrara Candy Company) offer low-grade quality gummy candy. I used to work at a video store and we carried a number of Black Forest gummies: sharks, bears, dinosaurs, etc. They were disgusting. They were never fresh and they were so greasy you could see it rubbing off on the bag.
What’s really interesting about Haribo is that they have so many different varieties gummies. The sad thing is that I think many of them aren’t readily available in the United States. There’s quite a few you can have imported from European sellers through Amazon.com though! And that is how I got my hands on today’s Haribo products.
Creamy Ice! Aww, how adorable! The packaging is amazing. It almost looks Easter-y to me with its use of pastels and cute little ice cream cones. I think this is a new product that Haribo introduced to its German market (that’s where I had it imported from).
I was pretty impressed with the detail that went into these.
The texture is quite different than what you expect from a gummy. It’s more of a marshmallow-y feel and taste. I swear the cone portions have a unique flavor of their own that makes them taste like a waffle cone. Yes, a waffle cone-flavored gummy marshmallow. The flavors of the ice cream gummies are strawberry, lemon and blueberry. Strawberry is the best.
Haribo’s Creamy Ice are pretty unique in texture and flavor. If you like trying new kinds of candy (like I do), it’s worth ordering a bag of two but I’m not sure if I’d ever order them again.
I like things that are ginger flavored (like redheads), so I was looking forward to this one the most. I’m not sure if these are available in the U.S. anywhere. Reviews I read for this product called it “refreshing”, which I thought was interesting. I’ve heard soda described that way but never gummies.
I kinda enjoy looking at them though. They look like shiny pieces of amber. Unfortunately there was no mosquito to extract DNA from the start my own dinosaur park though.
Upon first bite, they are tangy (the lemon) and then a slight burn hits you (the ginger). Not bad. Definitely more of a kick from the ginger than I expected. These are decent though and I like them slightly better than the Creamy Ice.
That’s only half the story. The wings are fruit-flavored. The body? That’s black licorice. I HATE BLACK LICORICE.
If I had known there was black licorice in these, I would’ve never bought them. Possibly the worst gummy candy I’ve ever had. Who actually LIKES black licorice?
