Okay, so there’s thing called Loot Crate. It’s subscription service that you sign up for online (there’s various subscription levels) and they send you a box of geeky junk you don’t really need every single month. With a recent promotion at work, I’ve had some disposable income so I figured it’d be fun to sign up for after watching a bunch of “unboxing” videos on YouTube.
What’s genius about all of these box subscriptions services is that they all get unlimited free advertising. These companies encourage their customers to blog, tweet, Instagram, and YouTube about their goods. And what geek can’t resist the urge to review something on a blog or YouTube? Who knows, maybe some day I’ll take the YouTube plunge and do video reviews (under a mask or something) but until then, I’ll stick to spilling digital ink.
By the way, I have not been compensated by Loot Crate at all for this review. I know there’s a lot of reviewers that get sent free stuff like this to review online every month, but I ain’t one of them! I spent my own dough on this!
Every month has a theme. April’s theme was fantasy, which apparently had everyone excited and I’ve seen seem some reviewers say this month was one of Loot Crate’s best. Every month you get the Loot Crate magazine which features some short articles centered around the month’s theme, pictures of Loot Crate subscribers showing off their goods from the previous month and blurbs explaining what’s in the current box.
One very cool thing is that you can take the plain black Loot Crate box they mail you, unfold it and then flip it inside out to show off the design that fits in with the month’s theme. So now I’ve got this cardboard box with a cool treasure check design. The boxes are good enough to be collector’s items themselves. I have no intention of throwing this out. Well done, Loot Crate!
I posted a pic of everything that came in the box at the beginning of this post but now it’s time for a closer look:
Dragons and dice! According to the Loot Crate magazine, this is an exclusive item and it comes from a company called Black Tie Geek. I guess if I was more of a bow tie-wearing fellow this would be really awesome. I do wear ties (only because of work) but I have no interest in wearing bow ties. I know Loot Crate has given away Black Tie Geek ties in the past and I’m hopeful they’ll do so again.
Okay, I know this is a luggage tag but I don’t understand the significance of it in relation to Harry Potter. I’m not a fan, never read the books and I’ve only seen about half the movies. I’m sure I could look it up online and I just did. Yeah, this would be a really cool surprise for anyone who is a Harry Potter freak.
Game of Thrones Stark Sigil USB Flash Drive
[Loot Crate Exclusive]
I LOVE THIS. This is awesome. It’s 4GB USB drive and it’s amazing. I’ve got plenty of USB drives but this is a really cool keepsake and worth having on your desk just as decoration.
The Princess Bride Playing Cards
Another cool item. The cards seem to be of really good quality with a nice plastic coating. I haven’t seen the movie in probably 25 years but now that I own this and because there’s so many Princess Bride memes out there, perhaps it’s time I give it another go.
Game of Thrones Magnet Set
Another very cool pick-up. Everyone loves magnets, right?
Loot Crate April 2015 – Fantasy Button
Every month you get a button pin that commemorates that month’s theme.
Getting a geeky t-shirt every month is really what sold me on taking a chance with Loot Crate. I love geeky t-shirts but I don’t buy them often enough. I may not play the game but I LOVE the D&D cartoon from the 1980’s so I will proudly wear this shirt.
Loot Crate seems to be one of the more reasonably priced of the box subscription services. It’s not a whole lot of movie and, look, you’re going to get geeky nerdy knick-knacks that you don’t necessarily need but are still cool to have. The point is to have fun with it and geek out. It’s something to look forward to every month. I know not that there will probably be a few items everything month that don’t resonate with me such as the Harry Potter luggage tag, but so what? I can give that to a friend. I’m happy with my first box of Loot Crate and I’m very much looking forward to what’s in store for the month of May!
EDIT: I forgot about the inflatable crown!
