I’ve been in quite a Wii mood lately. I’m purposefully trying to step away from the computer and do something other than surf the net all day. Sure, playing video games is equally non-productive, but sometimes it ‘s a bit more fun.
Here’s what I’ve been playing in the last few days and weeks:
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith – A bit too easy, IMO, and the number of tracks (and the song selection itself) isn’t really all that impressive, but it’s been marked down to $20 so if you’re GH & Aerosmith fan, I think it’s well worth your money. Besides, I picked my copy up NEW for only $2 and some change thanks to trade-in credit I had on my Gamestop card.
Guitar Hero III – Sucks that there’s no DLC for the Wii version, but the track listing is pretty song. The flipside to that is that so many of those songs are not by the original artists.
Guitar Hero: World Tour – Nice number of songs, but it’s a mediocre mix of good guitar-based rock and way too much mellow stuff. C’mon… “Ramblin’ Man” by The Allman Brothers? “Demolition Man” by Sting? “On the Road Again (Live)” by Willie Nelson? I understand there’s 5,000 Guitar Hero games out, but please, there are better songs to pick for a game called GUITAR HERO.
The mix for the guitar is sometimes turned way too low on certain songs. DLC is a huge plus though.
Super Mario Bros. (Virtual Console/NES) – Of course this is the first video game a whole generation ever played, and I felt it was time to download it to the Wii, despite still having the original NES game & NES somewhere around the house. I just played it a bit today for the first time in years and it’s funny how I can still remember which bricks to hit, where a coin box is, etc.
Super Mario Bros. 2 (Virtual Console/NES) – Man, I really love this game. I’ve been playing it a lot in the past week. It’s a tough call for my favorite from the Super Mario NES Trilogy, it’s either this one or SMB3. It’s funny how rusty you can get at seemingly simple games though. I used to be able to cruise through this game when I was a kid, but now I find myself making so many stupid mistakes and losing lives.
Alex Kidd in Miracle World (Virtual Console/Sega Master System) – I never owned a Master System. In fact, I never knew it even existed until 1993, when I had a friend tell me about it. To this day, I’ve never seen one in person. But, I’ve heard a lot of praise for this game over the years, it’s a platformer and said to be the best game on the console, so I downloaded it. I HATE that if you touch an enemy one time, you die. I’ve always hated games like that. At least with Mario you can grab a mushroom and be “Super” to allow a little leeway. Still, seems fun enough, though I haven’t gotten far in it.
Wonder Boy in Monster Land (Virtual Console/Sega Master System) – I’ve never played any of the Wonder Boy games throughout the years, though it’s my understanding most are pretty good. The original game is available to download as well, IGN Wii gave this one a better review. I gotta say, I’m really liking it. It’s a platformer with RPG upgrade elements.
Mega Man 2 (Virtual Console/NES) – I was never very good at this game, the MM games have always been pretty hard for me, but I remember playing this (alongside Strider and River City Ransom) just about everytime I went over to a certain friend’s house. I had to download it just for nostalgia, so far, I’ve beaten Wood Man and Metal Man.
BTW – If you wanna watch someone play the whole game through (40 minutes long) check this out.
Onechanbara: Bikini Zombie Slayers – Zombies, T&A, and LOTS of blood. For $30, it’s a fun enough Wii game and it’s pretty fun using the nunchuk and Wiimote as you’re slinging your blades.
Super Paper Mario – I don’t like this game as much as the first two Paper Mario games. Both of those had a classic Mario feel to them, but this one takes place in a totally different world and features a totally different villain — Count Bleck. How lame of a name is that? Bowser is actually on YOUR side this time. I do love that the game can go from 2D to 3D to manuever around enemies, find pipes and other secret stuff.
